The extravagant grave of the baker Eurisace

In 1938 the restoring intervention of the Gate called Maggiore, requested by Pope Gregorio XVI, Marco Virgilio EURISACE, a wealthy Roman baker and his wife’s graves were found.

The funeral monument incorporated in the main tower, dates back to about 30 B.C. And is the copy in travertin of a oven to cook bread, as the epigraph witnesses: “This grave belongs to Marco Virgilio EURISACE, baker, contractor and appeared”.Eurisace’ job appears more evident if you observe the different phases of the bread making: the grain weighing and grinding, the flour sifting, the mixing and the baking.
